4. How Did You Get Started In Magic

The most asked question I get after, "How did you do that?" is  ---- "How did you get started in magic?"

When I was 8 years old, I was the magical assistant for my brother who was a teenager just learning magic. We weren't very good and it didn't last long as sports and girls (for my brother) took over our full attention. Magic tricks were put aside and soon forgotten.

Although I liked magic and enjoyed watching magicians on TV, I had never seen a magician in person.  In fact, I hadn't seen a live performance of any type, except for school plays, until I was in college. It was on a business trip to New York in 1988 when the magic bug bit.

A friend asked me to join her and a friend for dinner. It just so happened that her friend was a magician.  Before we went to dinner he asked if he could do a “street show” to raise some money for his dinner.  I quickly agree and saw an amazing show! It wasn’t the actual tricks that he did that were amazing, but he did them very well, it was his performance that was truly amazing.

You see, he slowly gathered a crowd around him on a busy New York street – that in itself was a great trick. He began working the crowd, teasing the ending while performing some good small magic tricks that he had in his pocket. No big illusions, just very good entertainment. It had to be entertaining to keep the crowd of about 60 people involved in the show. Before he did his last trick, he passed around the hat saying, “If you enjoyed the show, put some money in the hat.”.

You’re either good or you starve. Very good incentive to be good at what you do!
He made about $60 bucks (that’s a lot in 1988 dollars) – enough for his dinner.

I learned two things that day in 1988:
1. That I really enjoyed the feeling that only magic provides -- amazement and wonder!
2. You can't just do a trick well, you had to be entertaining for others to enjoy magic.
When magic is done well and is entertaining, it is truly an art form without peer.

Seeing the magician entertain all those people rekindled the magic bug in me again. The next day I went to the local magic shop – Tannen’s Magic, which turned out to be one of the more famous magic shops in the U.S. I was truly amazing to see ALL THAT MAGIC in one place. I didn’t know such places existed. I was immediately taken back to my childhood. I quickly bought a few small tricks and more importantly, my first book.
I took the tricks back to my hotel room and practiced. On the flight home I read that book and couldn’t put it down. I was like a little kid again – magic can do that.

Has anyone else had this type of experience where something happened in your life that started a new passion or rekindled a passion for something that had laid dormant for years? Let me hear from you.

Just to remind everyone that I have a entertaining shows for children as well as adults. Call me or go to my website for details, pictures and testimonials.
